Leroy Sims, the only winner of the Purple Dove Award, who has been shooting doves since about the time gunpowder was invented or something has been making the dove hunt trip with us for decades. He is noted for his wonderful geologist storytelling about West Texas drilling in the good old days when even Texas democrats were conservative. Leroy sets the bar kind of high with his expectations and he taught us how to go into the hunting fields traveling like British Colonels with careful pre-planning for comfort and convenience. It has been said many times that one does not have to practice being uncomfortable. Hardship and discomfort just happen when adequate amounts of water, ear and eye protection, chairs, bug spray, sunscreen, food, good books and classical music are left behind. It’s also good to have a gun and some ammo.
